Can you spare 5 mins a day?
When gurus and life-hackers talk about their daily routines, they usually start with daily meditation, journalling, exercises, ice-plunges, grounding, light therapy etc etc as well as having time to tell you how to do this on social media, whilst presumably having a busy day job..
I do recommend these things too, if you have time and you control every aspect of your day…
but…
It’s exhausting just thinking about it all.
So, better not bother, ‘cos who has time? Right?
For the majority of mere mortals, you get up as late as you can, rush to get ready, slurp tea or coffee if you have time, maybe a shake for breakfast (‘cos you need the protein but there’s no time for 6 egg whites/ tofu omelette).
Maybe you take kids to school before you go to work, or walk the dog, or both…
You drive to work (get stressed) get to work, get COFFEE and check social media.. (I mean, login to something / teach class / get on the phone etc)
Ehem.
Then you make like Rihanna and “work work work work work” .. (get stressed) with occasional breaks to play a game on your phone (I favour a scrabble type game).
Go home – sit in traffic (where did they learn to drive??) or on public transport
Cook, feed children (wait… pick up children first) feed children, feed yourself..walk dog..
Start watching your series on Netflizzzzzzzz.. get prodded awake, I was watching that!
(just me?) Side bar.. if it’s something I want to watch I can fall asleep in minutes, Something crappy and I’ll be awake for the whole annoying, terribly written, obvious plot twisty thing.
Anyway.. If you’re tired, stressed, busy..
When are you supposed to take time to reflect, go for a walk (without the dog) , or sit and meditate?
And why would you meditate anyway?
The goal of meditation could be enlightenment, or “automatic self-transcending”, or you know, just to calm your mind and relax your body, or contemplate the meaning of life the universe and everything / nothing-ness.
What ever type of meditation you choose, if you can spare 5 minutes, maybe this will help .. you don’t have to do anything in particular. You don’t have to sit in lotus position to stop yourself falling asleep.
Just listen, follow the instructions to breathe and sit quietly with your eyes closed, place your attention on different parts of your body in turn , think abut your breathing.
If you can spare a whole 5 minutes, and manage to do it most days (when you remember, in between Wordle and Facebook)
You may find you feel calmer, more relaxed and able to cope with your busy day. .
