How to finally get a good night’s sleep…
If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, it can be hard to get to sleep and stay asleep.
The more we worry about things that have happened during the day, replaying conversations in our head, or wishing something had gone differently… the harder it can be to settle down and relax.
Maybe you’re worrying about something that hasn’t happened yet, things you need to do (or something you imagine could go wrong)
Writing down anything that is bothering you before you sleep can help you relax and allow your brain to set down the problem for now. You may find the solution presents itself more easily after a good night’s sleep.
When we don’t sleep well on a regular basis, it impacts all areas of our lives, a lack of sleep means we are more likely to make mistakes, eat the wrong things, snap at people and then beat ourselves up about it.
Establishing a good daily routine, not just before bed, but all day can help break the vicious cycle of stress, lack of sleep, more stress…
If you live on coffee ☕️ try to limit your intake to the mornings. Caffeine stays in our bloodstream for up to 10 hours, so even if you’re used to coffee it can disrupt your sleep way after your last cup.
Try to go to bed and get up at the same times every day including weekends.
Start your day with sunlight if you can, go outside for a few minutes and take a few deep breathes.
Take time every morning to be grateful for people and positive things in your life.
Try to get some exercise every day, whether it’s going to the gym, or a walk round the block, anything you can do consistently will be beneficial.
When it comes to sleep, keep your bedroom cool and as dark as possible. Turn off screens or use nighttime settings to not have too much light and distraction.
Take some time to focus on your breathing and practice progressive muscle relaxation to get your body ready to sleep.
